Peer Interview

Peer Interview

If you were that lucky player that just won the lottery, how would you spend it? In the case of Jahidur Rahman, he said “I would invest it all so that the money could work for me”. Most individuals would choose to use their money for the short term but long term is what Jah is focusing on. He aspires to be a real estate agent and day trader in the future. His journey to reach his dream job started a year ago when he looked on youtube to obtain day trader skills and has been honing them ever since. Jah also strives for higher education by making the decision to go to college, which could help him reach his dream job.

When I asked him where he would be 10 years in the future, he said “married in a nice apartment with my dream car and multiple streams of income.” During the interview Jah maintained eye contact and stood tall in his chair where he displayed confidence and genuinity in his answers. He was wearing an apple watch and did the interview professionally as if he was in a business interview at a million dollar company. When I asked him what word would describe him, he said a hustler. When asked about a time of how he was a hustler, he told me of how in highschool, he would sell snacks and drinks for profits and accumulated money, which he saved up and invested towards college and future purchases. He also actively looked online for deals and would try to get discounts on different stores and services so that he saved the most money possible. He also tries to save money from college expenses by trying to get pdfs of textbooks or renting some of the books from the cuny library.

Some of Jah’s interests and hobbies include playing basketball, watching tech videos and car videos. He said that he enjoys these activities because they are entertaining and educational. Jah tries to incorporate some of the skills that he uses from his hobbies into a more practical form so that he could benefit more from his time. For example, in highschool Jah’s science teacher was having difficulties with the smartboard because she couldn’t connect to the internet. Jah remembered from a youtube video that most times people can’t access the internet because the ethernet plug gets loose or is not connected. So he told her about it and she realized that it was not connected so she did so. The internet came back and the class resumed.

I asked Jah about the area that he grew up and what he liked and disliked about it. He said that he lives in Queens and likes how there are always things to do. He did say that he grew up in Jamaica, which isn’t the safest place, which taught him valuable skills about how to stay safe and away from trouble. Jah’s family consists of his parents and three other brothers. One of his brothers is two years older than him so they get along well and Jah considers him his role model. His brother taught him how to play basketball and videogames and is grateful for the things that his brother taught him. I also asked Jah if his education stops after finishing college. Jah said that one can always learn even if they are not currently pursuing a degree or going to school. He said “When one journey ends another begins. You have to find something that interests you and then dig deep into it and obtain that knowledge and information.”

What if you weren’t that lucky player that won the lottery, how would you deal with it? “There is no such thing as easy money but this loss would give me more passion and ambition to work harder so that I could earn that money fair and square on my own.”
